A windswept sun-soaked Boherlahan was the chosen location for the Mid U-14 football finals with Brackens involved in both the A and C deciders. First up was the C final v Durlas Og with our boys strong favourites having sailed through their campaign. But the Cathedral town boys were well up for the battle and took the game to Brackens right from the get go keeping things very tight at the back. A point apiece after 13 mins reflected this and were it not for some wayward shooting Durlas Og could have been well ahead. But once Jamie Monaghan, Shane Leahy and Sean Jordan got a foothold in the middle third the tide began to turn. Points from Jordan (2) and Monaghan were added to by majors from Leahy, Kyle Whelan and Monaghan to leave Brackens 3-3 to 0-1 up approaching the break. A late penalty and a point from play gave Durlas Og a glimmer of hope at the break (3-3 to 1-2). The introduction of Daniel Devanney at half-time reaped instant rewards as he struck for a brace of goals inside the opening two minutes and when Sean Jordan rattled the onion bag shortly after there seemed no way back for Durlas Og ( 6-3 to 1-2). But back they came with 3 majors of their own in the next 10 mins and it was game on again. Like all good teams Brackens recovered and came strong again in the closing minutes. The switching of Leahy and Whelan to the back line steadied the ship and with Cormac Bourke in fine form at full back the tide was stemmed. A lovely point from play by Ewan Patterson along with one each from Jordan and Monaghan saw Brackens home on a 6-6 to 4-3 scoreline. Well done to each and every player involved along with the management team of Arthur Kelly, William Whelan, Michael Prout, Michael Maher and Jack O'Shea. And isn't it wonderful nowadays to see every player getting a game. Gone are the days when 24 or 25 would turn up and 7 or 8 would go home without a game. Long may it last.
